چکیده
A (convex) polytope is the convex hull of finitely many points in Rd. Alternatively, a polytope can be defined as the bounded intersection of finitely many halfspaces, that is, a polytope is the (bounded) solution set of a system of linear equations and inequalities. (This latter fact is the main non-geometric reason why people are interested in polytopes—linear systems are everywhere.) The main focus of my research centers around the seemingly simple task of computing the volume of a polytope, that is, volP := ∫ P dx. (If dimP 6= d, we have to adjust this definition by computing this integral in the affine span of P.) Volume computation is hard. To illustrate this statement, let me give an example. The nth Birkhoff polytope is the set of all n× n doubly-stochastic matrices:

متن کاملResearch Statement: Combinatorial Methods in Algebra and Geometry
My research is at the intersection of algebra, geometry, and combinatorics. My dissertation work under Pramod Achar involved a deep study of the singularities of certain topological spaces through the lens of perverse sheaves. Concurrently, I began working with Greg Muller on cluster algebras, a subject that is related to a large number of areas in mathematics, but which has a somewhat easier p...
متن کاملHopf Algebras in Combinatorics
Certain Hopf algebras arise in combinatorics because they have bases naturally parametrized by combinatorial objects (partitions, compositions, permutations, tableaux, graphs, trees, posets, polytopes, etc). The rigidity in the structure of a Hopf algebra can lead to enlightening proofs, and many interesting invariants of combinatorial objects turn out to be evaluations of Hopf morphisms. These...
